In case you haven't heard, our very own Shawn Lowrey was nominated for Best of the Pine Belt this year, and we couldn't be any prouder! If you haven't voted yet, learn a little more about him with our short Q&A.
What do you love most about Hattiesburg?
How eclectic and accepting it is. I moved away 4 times, and never found anywhere that was quite like it. Rather like goldilocks that every place was too much, or too little, and Hattiesburg was just right.
What is your hobby?
I am a tabletop wargamer and boardgame nerd.
What do you love most about your job?
Learning peoples stories and trying to help them. I often see people at the lowest point in their lives, and try to help them to get to a place where they can heal and be happy. Having been divorced before I know how hard it can be, and how it important it can be to go through the process with empathy and wisdom so that you can find the light at the end of the tunnel.
If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be and why?
My parents when they were in their early 30s. I don't know those people, and I wish I had an idea of who they were when they were then. We change so much over time, to see them then, and get to know them would be truly eye opening.
Best piece of advice anyone has ever given you?
This too shall pass. Whatever it is that has you upset, or stressed, or is driving you insane, it will go away. Stress, depression and sadness are fleeting, and knowing that means they have less power over you.
What does it mean to you to be nominated by your peers and community members?
I am honestly shocked. I did not think that someone that primarily deals with domestic problems for people would be nominated, considering most people never want to think of them again. It's very kind of the community and I look forward to celebrating everyone that was nominated at the awards ceremony in June.
If someone was thinking about moving to Hattiesburg, what would you say to them to convince them to make the Hub City home?
Come to an event during Live At 5 downtown, and enjoy the entire weekend. Last weekend could not have been more beautiful downtown, with Lucky Rabbit open, with the weather being perfect, events all weekend and music in the streets. I can't imagine a more wonderful place to live and what our community still has to look forward to.
